City looking to push on in pursuit of top-four finish

Javier Garrido believes Carlos Tevez could hold the key to Manchester City's top-four challenge. The Argentine hit-man netted his 22nd goal of the season in the Blues' 2-1 victory over Fulham on Sunday to take Roberto Mancini's men back into fifth spot. They are now two points behind Tottenham with a game in hand, as the race for UEFA Champions League qualification hots up. Their hopes of pipping Spurs, Liverpool and Aston Villa to fourth place could rest on the performances of their big-game players. Tevez certainly falls into that category and Garrido is adamant the South American superstar can inspire City's charge in much the same way as Wayne Rooney has led cross city neighbours Manchester United's title hunt.

Great

"Wayne Rooney has been great for United this season. And Carlos Tevez is maybe our Rooney," he told the Manchester Evening News. "When Carlos plays, the team respond. They feel he is one player who will always give his best." Garrido believes City are well-placed to snatch the final seat at Europe's top table this term, but admits they need to brace themselves for one big push during the end of season run-in. He said: "We are in a good position, and the right frame of mind. "Of course, we have to do well in the last few games most of which are at home. We have to be strong but it's in our own hands."
