Burton sign Clarets trialist

Burnley have handed a trial to Irish goalkeeper Saul Deeney.

Burnley have handed a trial to Irish goalkeeper Saul Deeney.

The 22-year-old left Notts County earlier this week after The Magpies decided to release him, as he would not sign a prolonged deal at Meadow Lane.

Deeney has now got himself a trial at Turf Moor, although he has also agreed to play for Conference side Burton Albion on non-contract terms.

"Saul will be training with Burnley next week, but hopefully he will play a few games for us," said Burton boss Nigel Clough.

"We have been monitoring his situation for a while because he turned down a new contract at Meadow Lane in June.

"Notts kept paying him because his age meant they would be able to ask for a fee if he found a new club.

"He's had trials with Bristol City, Crewe and Sheffield United and now Burnley are interested.

"We were going to take him on loan until it transpired he was going to be released by Notts.

"At the moment, it suits both parties to have a look at each other, but if nothing materialises at Burnley, it is possible he might enjoy it with us and stay."
