Premier League: Adam Johnson feels Sunderland miss Fraizer Campbell

Adam Johnson believes Fraizer Campbell would have been a success story at Sunderland had he remained at the club.

The hard-working striker enjoyed what was arguably the most productive spell of his career while on Wearside.

His efforts were noted by interim England coach Stuart Pearce in 2012, with a solitary senior cap earned in a friendly date with the Netherlands.

Campbell was, however, coming off the back of serious knee problems and was allowed to leave the Stadium of Light in January 2013 for Cardiff City.

Johnson was sad to see the former Manchester United trainee depart and feels Sunderland should have held his ability in higher regard.

Ahead of Monday’s reunion with Campbell, who is now on the books at Crystal Palace, the England winger told the Echo: “No, I didn’t think he needed to (leave).

“I know he was never prolific here, but I think he gives you so much.

“He works hard and he’s got pace up front. He’s difficult to play against, whether he’s scoring goals or not.

“The way the Premier League is going now, everyone is lacking pace. He had that in abundance.

“I rated him highly.”
