Highly-rated defender seals switch to South Coast

Nathaniel Clyne has completed his move to Southampton after the South Coast club agreed a compensation package with Crystal Palace. The 21-year-old was a free agent after his deal at Selhurst Park expired and penned a four-year contract at Saints last week. The clubs, though, could not agree on how much compensation they should pay for the player, which Palace are entitled to under FIFA rules because of his age. But now the deal, believed to be around £2.5m, has been struck to give Clyne the green light to play for his new club when the season starts. "We are also very pleased to have worked constructively with Southampton to conclude the deal before it went to a tribunal," said Palace co-chairman Steve Parish. The England Under 21 international has already appeared for Saints, turning out in their 1-0 friendly victory over Evian and could participate against Ajax on Saturday." Manager Nigel Adkins is impressed with how quickly the youngster has settled in at his new club. "Nathaniel has done very well," said manager Nigel Adkins. "He only had one training session before he joined us so we're upping the game with him in a way that will make sure he doesn't break down."
