Cardiff have lodged a counter-claim against their former owner Sam Hammam.

Hammam, who was in control of the Welsh club between 2000 and 2006, revealed in February that current Cardiff owner Vincent Tan and the club were being sued for nearly £6m owed to Swiss-based creditors Langston.

The historic debt dates back to the issuing of loan notes worth £24m when Hammam was in charge and the matter between the two parties originally went to the High Court in 2008.

On that occasion Mr Justice Briggs stated that, in effect, "Hammam was Langston" but Malaysian businessman Tan, who bought Cardiff in 2010, struck a £15m deal in 2013 to settle the debt.

Part of that deal saw Hammam named honorary life president of the Bluebirds but the club has now issued a counter-claim against him and Langston.

The claim was made on Wednesday and will run alongside the one made by Langston, which claims that Cardiff are in default of a £5.75m payment which should have been paid at the end of January.

A procedural hearing - known as a case management conference - will be fixed in the next few weeks when Cardiff – according to the Press Association – will claim the club actually overpaid on the debt.
