Latics close on midfield duo

Oldham are closing in on midfield duo Craig Rocastle and Paul McLaren.

Oldham boss John Sheridan is closing in on midfield duo Craig Rocastle and Paul McLaren according to widespread reports.

It has been suggested that both players have agreed moves to Boundary Park in principle although Sheridan is loath to disclose the names of his targets.

The rookie chief is in the market for midfield reinforcements and having added Gary McDonald to his ranks already, more signings are expected soon.

Rocastle is a 25-year-old midfielder who began his career at Chelsea but moved to Sheffield Wednesday in a quest for regular first team football.

Despite appearing in 19 games last season for the Hillsborough outfit, Wednesday boss Paul Sturrock has informed him he would be free to leave if he received offers from elsewhere.

Likely to join Rocastle in the North West is McLaren, despite the fact the 29-year-old has been offered fresh terms to stay at Rotherham.

With a wealth of experience and over 400 appearances to his name McLaren is seen as an ideal old head to marshal the midfield next season.
