Rovers roll over Owls

Tranmere Rovers earned a 4-2 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Prenton Park.

Tranmere Rovers moved up to second in the League One table after a thrilling 4-2 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Prenton Park.

It was Brian Little's side who took a two-goal lead - with Calvin Zola Makongo heading home on 12 minutes from Ryan Taylor's cross.

Six minutes later, Rovers doubled their advantage when Michael Jackson scored from a flicked corner to delight the home support.

Nine minutes later, Wednesday pulled one back through summer signing Steven Maclean, but Tranmere restored their two-goal advantage on the half hour mark when Taylor converted from the penalty spot after Hume was brought down in the Owls' box.

The match remained a contest at half time after Chris Turner's side scored a second goal when John-Paul McGovern set up MacLean, who in turn, set up Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu to slip a shot past Rovers goalkeeper John Achterberg just before the break.

The second half, however, saw Tranmere seal victory, as the lively Hume celebrated his re-call to the Canada squad for next week's World Cup qualifiers with a goal of his own on 64 minutes.

His run down the left flank saw him cut inward and on to his right foot before striking an Owls defender and then past goalkeeper David Lucas for 4-2.

Wednesday's night in the Wirral was made worse when Guy Branston was sent off for a second bookable offence after an off-the-ball incident with Rovers striker Eugene Dadi.
