Mark Hughes says Stoke showed all the qualities he wants from a team after they scored a late equaliser to draw 1-1 against West Ham.

Mark Hughes hailed Stoke City's character after they battled for a 1-1 draw at West Ham United to halt a run of three straight defeats.

Aaron Cresswell's first-half free-kick looked to have won the day, only for Marko Arnautovic's first league goal in almost a year to earn a point in the 95th minute.

Hughes said: "For us it was one of those days, we conceded to a great free kick but we kept going and showed great character.

"We could not quite find the final ball, but credit to the lads because they stuck at it and deserved to get something. They were the better team, so we got some reward but probably not what they should have had."

He added: "We are thankful for small mercies, because we did not think we were going to get what we deserved.

"I thought we totally dominated the game and should have won it by a country mile.

Sam Allardyce says West Ham have thrown away seven points from their last nine games

"We had the setback from the great free-kick early in the game, and it is difficult when you are the away side to come back.

"We showed great resilience and stuck at it, trying to create things, but just lacked that bit of quality at the top end.

"If one of our disallowed goals had counted, I think we would still have had time to go on and win the game.

"We want to better last season's total and are determined now to get something out of all of the matches we have left."
