David Prutton could be set to leave Southampton ahead of Wednesday's transfer deadline.
The Saints midfielder has been given permission to speak to other clubs, including his former team Nottingham Forest, who are reportedly favourites to land his services.
Southampton boss George Burley told the club's website: "David came to speak to me and said he feels at this stage he needs regular first-team football.
"I cannot offer him that at the moment so I have granted permission for him to speak to one or two clubs. Forest are one of them."
Burley is also currently trying to bring in other players on loan to St Mary's for the second half of the season.
