Saints in Fiorese link

Marseille schemer Fabrice Fiorese is reportedly a target for Southampton.

Unwanted Marseille schemer Fabrice Fiorese is reportedly a target for struggling Premiership club Southampton.

Fiorese has slipped out of the first team picture at Stade Velodrome, following the appointment of Philippe Troussier as coach.

The 29-year-old only joined l'OM last summer from Paris Saint Germain but has made just one appearance under Troussier and has not even been on the substitutes' bench for the past two matches.

Marseille are now ready to sanction the attacker's departure as he has not been accepted by the club's fans.

The Marseille paymasters want to ship Fiorese out on loan for the rest of the season and Southampton have been put forward as suitors.

Saints boss Harry Redknapp is anxious to bolster his squad this month in an attempt to keep the club in The Premiership.

A loan until the end of the campaign would be suitable from Southampton's point of view but reports across The Channel suggest Fiorese is not so enamoured by that prospect.

Fiorese admitted last week that he would consider a switch to England but he wants to join a club higher up the table, rather than link up with a Southampton side locked in the relegation zone.
