Kenny Jackett is searching for a player who can give Wolverhampton Wanderers 'another 10 to 15 per cent in terms of quality'.
Wolves have explored several options in recent weeks, but appear to have given up on their pursuit of Leicester City striker Chris Wood and out of contract youngster Max Clayton.
Jackett remains very much in the market, though, for a quality addition that could make all the difference in the push for a top-six finish in the Sky Bet Championship.
He said in the Express and Star: "There are big decisions on personnel in our group: Who can do it this season and who can't?
"Players coming in is a key one and early on in a season, we're assessing the squad and seeing what we need to complement the squad to maybe give you another 10-15 per cent in terms of quality.
"For example, George Thorne was a big loss for Derby because he really lifted them last season – sometimes one player can make a difference and a team can really go on a run."
Jackett has also pointed out that his pursuit of fresh faces will not be affected by big earners still on the books on Molineux.
He would prefer to see those training in ‘group three’ move on, but insists he retains the full backing of his board in the transfer market.
Jackett added: "It would be beneficial if those players moved on because it's a very big handicap on the wage bill.
"But no-one has ever said to Kevin Thelwell or me, 'You can't go for player 'x' until you get rid of player 'y' who is still there'."
