Brown ends search for left-back with arrival of former Norwich man

Preston have confirmed the signing of defender Steven Smith from Norwich on a free transfer. Skysports.com revealed earlier in the week that Phil Brown's League One club were interested in the left-back. And Preston have now announced that the Scotland Under 21 international will go straight into their squad for Saturday's trip to Scunthorpe. Smith told his new club's official website: "I found out about the move on Tuesday night and now I'm delighted to be a Preston North End player. "I'm primarily a left-back who can play in left midfield. It is a position I enjoy playing, I like to get forward and enjoy a tackle.

"From the first moment I met the manager I knew this is where I wanted to come. Phil is the kind of manager who players' want to play for and I'm glad to be here. "I can't wait to make my debut for the club and if he picks me to play against Scunthorpe then I will give it all that I have got." Brown is pleased to have completed the deal after previously coping without a recognised left-back. He said: "We have been looking for a natural left-footed player to come into the club and I'm delighted we have got someone with the calibre and pedigree of Steven Smith. "We have been looking to strengthen the left-back position for some time and I'm delighted we have managed to secure the services of Steven."
