Preston North End manager Phil Brown is optimistic of finalising a deal to sign defender Clarke Carlisle on loan from Burnley.
Skysports.com revealed before the weekend that Carlisle was poised to join Preston on a season-long loan arrangement despite being a regular for Burnley last term.
Brown feels the 31-year-old is keen to move to Deepdale and the centre-half would help to compensate for the recent departure of Sean St Ledger to Leicester City.
"We have been in constant contact with Burnley with regards a number of issues," Brown told the
Lancashire Evening Post.
"Clarke Carlisle is one of those issues and fingers crossed, we are close or further down the line in getting Clarke to come to us.
Quality player
"He is a Leyland lad and he's said to me that all along in his career he has wanted to play for Preston North End at some stage.
"Clarke is a quality player who has played in the Premier League and the Championship."
Burnley boss Eddie Howe added: "The clubs have agreed a deal and now it is up to Clarke to agree things with Preston.
"He has been a fantastic servant for the club and I can't speak highly enough about him as a player and a person.
"His attitude and commitment to the cause can never be questioned and if he goes, he goes with our best wishes."
