Clough says County midfielder is "on the radar"

Derby boss Nigel Clough has said he would be interested in signing Ben Davies from Notts County. The 29-year-old is one of a number of players being monitored by the club as they bid to bolster their midfield. Clough watched Davies play against Dagenham & Redbridge last weekend, whilst his coaching staff have been monitoring his progress in the Carling Cup. "He is on the radar, but we have been out watching a lot of games," Clough told the Derby Telegraph. Meanwhile, Rams striker Luke Varney looks set for a season elsewhere as the club negotiate a deal for him to go out on loan. QPR and Varney's former club Charlton are amongst a list of teams keen on securing his services for the remainder of the campaign. "It is getting very close to a deal being done," said Clough. "It will probably be a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move. There are just a few loose ends to tie up." Varney, who is one of Derby's highest earners, spent most of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday. He signed under former management in January 2009 but has struggled to maintain a regular game under Clough's reign.
