Jeff Whitley will follow Marcus Stewart in leaving Sunderland in the summer.

Mick McCarthy is preparing a squad for the demands of The Premiership next term and confirmed on Friday that striker Stewart would be leaving The Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats boss has now revealed that Northern Ireland international Whitley will not receive a new contract in the summer.

Whitley has spent the past two seasons on Wearside and has been a regular but he will not be retained for the club's Premiership assault.

In addition to Whitley, goalkeeper Michael Ingham, who has made just four appearances for Sunderland, will also leave when his contract expires.

McCarthy has also put Sean Thornton and Mark Lynch on the transfer list as he shapes his squad for a campaign in the top flight.

"Jeff Whitley is going and Sean is on the transfer list," said McCarthy. "So is Mark Lynch."

Thornton joined Sunderland from Tranmere in 2002 but he has never cemented a regular starting spot during his three years in the North East.

Lynch joined The Black Cats from Manchester United last summer but the defender has not featured in the team since the end of February.
