Collins earns new deal

Sunderland have signed central defender Neill Collins to a new contract.

Sunderland have signed central defender Neill Collins to a new contract at The Stadium of Light.

The 20-year-old moved to The Black Cats in a £25,000 move from Scottish Second Division side Dumbarton in the summer and initially penned a two-year contract with the North East outfit.

However, Collins's impressive displays for the Championship side have earned him a new deal until June 2007.

His progress has been impressive, considering he had been playing part-time football with The Sons last season.

"Neill has done really well since arriving at the start of the season and we wanted to extend his deal to reward him," manager Mick McCarthy told the club's official website.

"He has a bright future at Sunderland and I'm pleased we have been able to secure his services for the next three years."
