Doyle set for new deal

Birmingham are to reward goalkeeper Colin Doyle with a new contract.

Birmingham are to reward goalkeeper Colin Doyle with a new contract.

Doyle has impressed since replacing Northern Ireland number one Maik Taylor at St Andrews.

And on Sunday the Cork-born shot-stopper produced an injury-time penalty save to earn a vital 3-2 win at Wolves to keep Blues on track for a return to the Premiership.

Doyle has been linked with a move to Arsenal but boss Steve Bruce says he wants to keep him in the Midlands.

"Colin has got a bright future ahead of him and there is no doubt that we want to keep him here," said Bruce.

"To keep someone of Maik Taylor's calibre out of the team means he must have something about him and he has done well.

"Although we need to know what division we are in before we start discussing contracts in detail, we will be sitting down with Colin, that's for sure."

Blues assistant boss Eric Black added: "Colin has waited patiently. He's had periods when he has done exceptionally well in the reserves and was pushing for a first team place.

"But now he's got it, he's grabbed it with both hands. He's got a magnificent presence.

"His handling is getting a lot more secure and, although any young keeper's decision-making will always be exposed initially, I can only see that developing over the next year or two."
