Championship round-up

Norwich fought back to beat Luton, while Plymouth saw off Sunderland.

Norwich fought back from two goals down to end Luton's perfect start to the season, while Leicester climbed off the foot of the table with a home win over struggling Ipswich and Sunderland were beaten at home by Plymouth.

Birmingham continued their unbeaten start to the season when taking a point from their trip to Stoke, while Cardiff saw off Coventry and Barnsley came from behind to beat Colchester.

Sunderland's poor start to the season continued on Saturday as they were beaten at home by Plymouth.

The Black Cats started brightly and Daryl Murphy fired them in front from six yards inside 60 seconds.

Those who had made the trip from the South Coast could have been forgiven for fearing the worst, but they were on level terms within seven minutes as David Norris fired home from the edge of the box.

Things got worse for Sunderland just before the break as Barry Hayles seized on a poor backpass from Kenny Cunningham before slotting into an unguarded net.

Stephen Elliott eased the home fans' frustration when popping up with a back-post header, but their bubble was burst eight minutes from time as Nick Chadwick netted the winner for The Pilgrims.

Leicester started the day at the foot of the table, but they produced a polished display to get the better of pointless Ipswich.

The Foxes started brightly and Patrick Kisnorbo opened the scoring on eight minutes when climbing high to head home a free kick from Danny Tiatto.

Ipswich failed to fashion a response and Stephen Hughes produced a fine finish with his left foot to hand his side a cushion, although he was aided by a poor clearing header from Dean Bowditch.

The visitors set up a grandstand finish when Matt Richards popped up with a goal five minutes from time, but Iain Hume's injury-time goal secured victory for Leicester.

Luton looked on course to move to the top of the table when taking a two-goal lead at Norwich, but The Canaries produced a superb fightback to claim a 3-2 win.

Rowan Vine put Luton ahead on 15 minutes when slamming home from just outside the box and Dean Morgan doubled the lead with a deft finish seven minutes after the interval.

Norwich produced a stirring response which will have pleased Nigel Worthington and Darren Huckerby handed them a lifeline when racing onto a Robert Earnshaw flick on before slotting home on 57 minutes.

Lee Croft's cross-shot found its way past Marlon Beresford to draw Norwich level and the comeback was completed when Earnshaw slotted home after Huckerby and Dickson Etuhu had seen their efforts repelled.

Unbeaten sides West Brom and Southampton played out a 0-0 draw at St Mary's, with the highlight of the contest being a free kick from Gareth Bale which struck a post with Pascal Zuberbuhler a spectator.

First half goals from Martin Rowlands and Nick Ward lifted Queens Park Rangers to victory over Southend.

Rowlands fired home a free kick on 31 minutes and Ward's close-range strike on 41 minutes secured a first win of the season for The R's.

Michael Chopra continued to repay his summer transfer fee when sliding in to slot home a cross from Joe Ledley 11 minutes from time, with the goal lifting Cardiff to a 1-0 win over Coventry.

Barnsley came from behind to beat fellow Championship newcomers Colchester.

Colchester led at the break as Greg Halford slotted home a cross from Jamie Cureton, but Marc Richards, who had squandered a number of chances before the break, levelled the scores with a neat header.

Brian Howard's goal deserved to win any game, as he let fly with a 30-yard firecracker on 78 minutes to hand the points to The Tykes.

Burnley fought back to maintain their unbeaten record when claiming a 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.

Steven MacLean fired The Owls in front from the penalty spot after Frankie Simek had been tripped in the box by Jon Harley, but James O'Connor climbed off the bench to score from close range on 82 minutes as Burnley moved to the top of the table.

The game did end on a sour note for Burnley, as Andy Gray was given his marching orders in stoppage time.

In the evening clash Derby County tasted success in The Championship for the first time this season following a 2-1 win at Hull City.

The visitors got off to a flying start when Matt Oakley superbly lashed home from the edge of the box after good work by Steve Howard.

However, Hull levelled matters before the break when Jon Parkin netted from the penalty spot after Craig Fagan was upended by Paul Boertien in the box.

Derby restored their lead in controversial circumstances when Tommy Smith scored the game's second penalty when Andy Dawson was adjudged to have handled in the box.

Despite late pressure from The Tigers they failed to muster an equaliser leaving them pointless three games into the new Championship season.

Birmingham maintained their unbeaten start to The Championship, although their 100 percent record no longer remains after a 0-0 draw with Stoke City at The Britannia Stadium.
