TOWN TARGET BLUES ACE HUGHES

IPSWICH TOWN boss George Burley is reported to have switched his attentions to Birmingham City midfielder Bryan Hughes, after failing in a bid to sign Southampton ace Hassan Kachloul.

Kachloul has turned down the opportunity to sign a new deal with Southampton and Burley made a second bid for the Moroccan international only for the player to reject his overtures.

Burley will have the opportunity to have a closer look at the former Wrexham star when his side take on Birmingham on Wednesday night in the second leg of their Worthington Cup semi-final at St Andrews for the right to face Liverpool in the Cardiff showpiece.

The 24-year-old ace impressed Burley in the narrow 1-0 first leg defeat and the Scot is set to test Birmingham's resolve to keep him by launching a bid for the player.

Blues boss Trevor Francis is keen to keep the influential star at the club but if they fail to win promotion to The Premiership, Hughes may decide to move from St Andrews.

Burley is keen to strengthen his squad, and his midfield in particular, as he tries to build on his side's encouraging return to the English top-flight.
