Former Everton midfielder Peter Reid says David Moyes will be gutted by his side's shock exit from the Capital One Cup and the missed opportunity of a prolonged run in the competition.
Everton crashed out after a 2-1 defeat to Championship side Leeds at Elland Road last night. Leeds went ahead with goals from Aidy White and Rodolph Austin and Everton failed to overturn the deficit despite Sylvain Distin pulling one back for the Premier League side.
After Everton's strong start to the new season, Reid believes Moyes will have been optimistic of a long run in the competition and it will be a bitter blow to bow out of a tournament they would have been targeting to end their trophy drought.
"David Moyes wanted to win this even though he made changes," he told
Sky Sports. "He thought the team he put out was good enough to win it. He will be disappointed.
"I think they have Southampton at the weekend at Goodison Park and he will be desperate for a victory in that. With teams like Everton, if they can win a cup it is fantastic. The support was brilliant and they wanted a result.
"Everton did not start. They were sloppy and it is always difficult if you don't start well to pick it up - they were one down after four minutes. Overall there was no real pace in the play."
In the second half Everton had two appeals for penalties turned down when Maroune Fellaini's shot was blocked, triggering calls of handball, and Victor Anichebe was brought down in the box.
Different class
Reid believes Everton had cause to feel aggrieved for not being awarded a penalty, but insists Leeds deserved their victory at Elland Road.
"Leeds were the better side. Everton improved in the second half but you have got to say that over the 90 minutes they shut Everton down and played some really good stuff when they had it," said the former Leeds boss.
"All the better players had white shirts on. I thought Diouf played really well, Austin and Becchio played well and certainly the man of the match White was a different class. All credit to Leeds they deserved it.
"Warnock has a terrific record of getting teams going and getting them out of the Championship. But that is a result against a Premier League club in the Capital One Cup and that can only give them confidence to go on in the league because the most important thing for Leeds and their fans is to get out of this league. This cup victory is only a bonus."
