Stuart Gray delighted with win as Sheffield Wednesday defeat Brentford

Sheffield Wednesday boss Stuart Gray was pleased to pick up three points in a 1-0 win against play-off hopefuls Brentford, despite admitting that the performance was not at the level that he wanted.

Kieran Lee grabbed the all-important goal 15 minutes from time. Having ghosted into space, and finding himself unmarked in the box, the ball fell kindly for him after being parried by David Button in the Brentford goal and he made no mistake, lashing his shot into the back of the net.

Gray said: "I think we've played better and lost games. I think we've played better and only drawn games. But the most important thing tonight was getting a win.

"Typical Sheffield Wednesday, we got chances to get the second goal and couldn't kill it off and in the end credit to Brentford because they've chased the game and caused us one or two problems. They've missed a good chance at the death.

"I think we've got to be a bit more clinical. The boy (Sergiu) Bus has got to go through and at least hit the target and then we've had two or three other good chances where we've broke three-on-three or three-on-two but I'm pleased with the win. I'm pleased for the fans too because they've not seen many wins here this season.

Sheffield Wednesday dented Brentford's Championship play-off hopes with a shock 1-0 victory at Hillsborough

"The most important thing is the result and, credit to the players, we're in that mid-table position where people think the boys have got their flip-flops on and they haven't."

Brentford boss Mark Warburton expressed his disappointment at losing, especially as his side had created enough chances to at least get a draw but he maintains that the play-off push is still on.

He said: "You saw it on Saturday, where we couldn't get a second goal despite a very good performance at Derby and again I thought we had good chances either side of half-time and goals change games, it's very simple.

"There's no use complaining about it. You can't hide the fact that it's a disappointment but we created enough chances to win the game and got punished for a mistake.

"You want to come and get three points but there are a lot of twists and turns still to go. We are capable of getting 80 points, which is a very, very strong total. In other years I think 72 has been the average and the highest in the last five years has been 75 I think.

"You saw the results tonight with Derby and Ipswich winning and Wolves losing so there will be more twists and turns. Wolves play Ipswich on Saturday and that's just the nature of the division."
