Steve Thompson has left Huddersfield to become Leeds head coach Neil Redfearn's assistant.

The 50-year-old, who began his playing career alongside Redfearn at Bolton, has signed a deal until the end of the season with the option of a further year.

Thompson made his name as a coach at Blackpool, working as assistant to Simon Grayson and then Ian Holloway as the club went from the third tier to the Premier League.

He had two spells as caretaker manager at Bloomfield Road before joining Huddersfield.

"When someone wants you and it's Leeds United it's a fantastic opportunity," said Thompson, who attended training on Thursday. "From what I saw there is some fantastic ability out there, and we're looking to improve."

Redfearn said: "It's great news for me, it's great news for the club. It's taken time but we've done it the right way. He has a wealth of experience, he's been promoted from this division."
