Championship: Mark Warburton says 'focus on standards' is key to Brentford's form

Brentford boss Mark Warburton says his players are focusing on maintaining their standards after their surprise run to third in the Championship table.

The Bees, who came up from League One last season, have been the division's surprise package with Saturday's 4-0 win over Wolves equalling a club record of five straight wins in the second tier.

"It's been a good run. The players have been outstanding and they've adapted to life in the Championship very well so it's a case of so far, so good," Warbuton told Sky Sports News HQ

"You just see what you can do week-in, week-out. We prepare well and the players have got the self-belief now - confidence is hugely important in this division and they've got that.

"I'm delighted for the supporters. There's a lot of confidence and self-belief but the message is very much we have to maintain focus and concentration because if they slip then we'll pay the price.

"We have set short-term targets which we keep in-house and try to incentivise appropriately.

Consistency

"But for us it's about preparing for every game, one-by-one and seeing what we can do. And if we can maintain a level of consistency we'll see where we come at the end of the season but right now it's just one game at a time."

Brentford are just one point behind leaders Derby, but their next five games see them face Huddersfield, Blackburn, Cardiff, second-placed Ipswich and another meeting with Wolves.

"It is a difficult month but there are no easy games so we're very aware of the level we need to be at," added Warbuton, who took over from previous boss Uwe Rosler when he left Griffin Park for Wigan in December 2013.

"If your standards slip, you get hurt: it's very, very simple. We have to try to maintain our standards and see if we can impose ourselves on each and every game but it's a very demanding league."

With the transfer window opening at the start of January, Warburton said he was open to adding to the squad if the right type of player became available.

"We'll look to add value but we don't want to bring in a body for the sake of it," he said. "Otherwise we've got a very strong squad and they're in a very good place at the moment."
