Nikola Zigic could be in line for a shock return to Birmingham after he rejoined them for training.

Boss Gary Rowett has invited the striker back to the club after he initially left in the summer when his contract expired.

Former boss Lee Clark blasted the Serbia forward in 2013 and dropped him after criticising his performance in training.

But Rowett has left the door open for Zigic to return now he is in charge.

"Obviously he is a player who is available and I am aware of the contribution to this club over the last four years," Rowett told the Birmingham Mail.

"We have had a chat and invited him to come and train with us.

"It's just a mutual thing at present: we can have a look at him, he can have a look at us and how we do things as we are a new management team. Nikola is aware of the financial boundaries in place.

"But he is keen to stay and play in this country and I am sure this club still means a lot to him.

"That's basically it. Nothing is definite, we will just see how things go."

Zigic signed from Valencia for £6million in 2010 and scored in Birmingham's 2-1 League Cup victory over Arsenal in 2011.

He netted 37 goals in 148 appearances for the St Andrew's club.
