Gary Rowett praised his battling Birmingham players and believes their belief has returned after the derby draw with Wolves.

The new boss guided his side to a 0-0 draw at Molineux in his first game in charge, just a week after Blues were thumped 8-0 by Bournemouth.

It failed to lift them out of the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone but stopped a run of three straight defeats.

Former Birmingham defender Rowett, who left Burton to return to St Andrew's, insisted they must look forward.

He said: "There's almost a relief they had the chance to put last week's result behind them, get a new message and a style of play.

Rowett's post-match reaction

"They have worked very hard. It's a very, very good start. If they work together as a squad then we can certainly achieve something.

"I didn't expect us to come and keep a clean sheet at Molineux but I'd certainly have taken it. It's something to build on now.

"Maybe we had to ride our luck on one or two things. I was a little concerned as, when I was driving to the training ground this morning, I saw two magpies and one flew in front of my car so I was driving around for a little while hoping I'd see his mate."

But Rowett insisted he would have been disappointed if Wolves had been awarded a penalty when James Henry's cross hit Jonathan Grounds' arm in the second half.

He said: "I've seen the replay again and you can discuss what type of terminology is a penalty now and someone mentioned his arm was in an unnatural position but if it's attached to his body surely that's fairly natural. You are not going to keep it stuck to your side all the time."

The point took Wolves top - ahead of the later games - and Dave Edwards hit the bar while Henry was denied by Darren Randolph late on.

Head coach Kenny Jackett admitted they were not at their best and must improve if they are going to maintain their promotion push.

He said: "There's a lot we can build on, we have only lost two games this season and that's a good basis. The points total is awfully tight and it's there for a number of clubs. We have to keep improving and making sure we move forward.

"We came up against a well organised and stubborn Birmingham and we didn't do enough to break them down.

Jackett sees Wolves go top

"We had a lot of the ball and we didn't do enough with it. We couldn't find the gaps. It was a lumpy game and a lumpy pitch."

But Jackett refused to hit out at referee Anthony Taylor for failing to award them a penalty for Grounds' handball.

He said: "Sometimes you get it and sometimes you don't and we don't have to keep on at the situation. It could have gone either way."

The manager also revealed his disappointment after the one-minute silence for Remembrance Day before the game was disrupted by both sets of fans

"We are looking for better," he added.
