Savage hails the job done by Derby manager

Nigel Clough wants to resolve the futures of his players before getting round to discussing a new deal as Derby County manager. Derby have risen to fourth in the Championship on the back of six wins in eight games and reports suggest Clough is in line for a new contract. However, before committing himself to a long-term future at Pride Park, Clough is keen to ensure several members of his squad and backroom team are looked after. "I wouldn't contemplate a new contract before all members of my support staff have signed theirs," said Clough. "But before that we have got several player negotiations to sort out. "I don't know anything about my own situation. When we were in the bottom three six weeks ago I was supposed to be out the door!"

Up with the best

Meanwhile, veteran midfielder Robbie Savage does not believe Clough has received enough credit for the job he has done at Derby. Savage said: "The gaffer puts other people first. This is someone who can go to the top. I've worked with a number of managers and Nigel is up there with the best. "I don't think people realise the job Nigel has done here. There was a big mess that needed clearing up and he's done that. "He kept us up in the first season and in the second we had our third highest finish in 10 years. And this year we're thinking about the play-offs."
