Sven Goran Eriksson has confirmed Leicester are close to signing former England striker Darius Vassell.

Roberts also on Eriksson's wanted list

Sven Goran Eriksson has confirmed Leicester are close to signing former England striker Darius Vassell. As revealed by skysports.com earlier this week Leicester were lining up a move for free agent Vassell. Eriksson knows all about Vassell having handed him his England debut with the striker going on to make 22 appearances for his country and scoring six goals. Vassell is a free agent after leaving the Turkish side Ankaragucu and he underwent a medical at the Walkers Stadium on Monday night. Eriksson believes former the Aston Villa and Manchester City forward still has a lot to offer, but concedes it will take some time before he is fit for action. "The deal will take hours and not days," said Eriksson. "Darius is not fit to play on Saturday. It will take hopefully two weeks to get him fit. "He will bring pace and experience, and can score goals. "He has been at this level and higher up for many, many years. "He is only 30 so he should be able to play for some years. He was in the England squad many times, so he will be good for us."

Target

Eriksson also admitted Blackburn striker Jason Roberts is one of his possible transfer targets. I have a list of about 50 names, and I have agents calling all the time," added Eriksson. "It is always like that. "They call me and say 'hello my friend'. I haven't spoken to them since I left Manchester City years ago, so I don't know how good friends they are, but it is good. "He (Roberts) is one of the names on the list, but it will not be done today. "All the players we have mentioned are good players with experience. They have a lot of pace as well. "If you want to raise the quality you have to bring in more players, but the base will always be the players who have been here before."
