Russell leaves Norwich after failing to agree a new deal

Brentford have signed the versatile Michael Spillane for an undisclosed fee from Norwich, while the Canaries have failed to agree a new contract with Darel Russell. The Republic of Ireland Under 21 international, who made his debut for the Canaries in January 2006, has signed a two-year contract at Griffin Park. Spillane becomes the Bees' sixth signing this summer following the arrivals of Craig Woodman, Kirk Hudson, Nicky Forster, Simon Royce and Richard Lee. The 21-year-old is able to play across the defence or the midfield and will therefore offer excellent versatility for manager Andy Scott. Meanwhile, Norwich have confirmed that Russell has left the club after failing to agree a new contract at Carrow Road. The 29-year-old was offered the chance to stay by manager Paul Lambert but, after a summer of deliberation, the combative midfielder has decided to move on. Lambert said: "I've spoken to Darel and he's free to talk to whoever he wants to now. "As everybody knows Darel has been brilliant for me and for the club over the years but he's now a free agent."
