Wolves striker loses FA appeal

Wolves striker Chris Iwelumo will serve a three-match ban after failing to overturn his red card against Preston North End. Iwelumo was sent off for violent conduct in Saturday's 3-1 win over Preston, having earlier scored a hat-trick at Deepdale. He clashed with Sean St Ledger, although the Preston stopper defended Iwelumo to the referee after the game. Molineux boss Mick McCarthy was hopeful the red card would be rescinded and appealed to the Football Association. However, the FA has stood by referee Martin Atkinson's decision, meaning Iwelumo will sit out Wolves' next three games against Bristol City, Reading and Swansea. An FA statement read: "At a Regulatory Commission hearing today, a claim for wrongful dismissal by Wolverhampton Wanderers' Chris Iwelumo was rejected. "Iwelumo was sent off for violent conduct at Preston North End on Saturday 20 September. The automatic three-match ban will therefore come in with immediate effect."
