Portuguese midfielder ruled out for the season

West Brom's promotion challenge has been dealt a blow with Filipe Teixeira ruled out for the rest of the season. The Portuguese midfielder is expected to be out for six months after scans revealed he had suffered a major cruciate ligament injury. The 27-year-old has been one of the Baggies' most influential players this season following his £600,000 move from Academica de Coimbra last summer, scoring five goals in 30 league appearances. Teixeira was carried off in Albion's 3-0 win over Plymouth last Saturday but had to wait for the results of a second scan as the first proved inconclusive due to swelling.

Disappointment

"We're obviously really disappointed for Filipe," said Baggies boss Tony Mowbray. "He is going to travel back to Portugal to get a second opinion but it looks like he will need reconstruction surgery. He's expected to be out for a minimum of six months and it's a big loss to the football club. "We'll now try to make his rehabilitation go as smoothly as possible." West Brom are currently fourth in the Coca-Cola Championship, just one point off an automatic promotion place.
