Billy McKinlay bitterly disappointed after parting company with Watford

Billy McKinlay admits he feels disillusioned after parting company with Sky Bet Championship club Watford.

The 45-year-old took charge at the end of September after Oscar Garcia stepped down due to ill health and started his reign with a 2-1 victory over Brentford before last weekend's 1-1 draw with Brighton.

But just eight days into his new role at Vicarage Road, McKinlay was replaced by Slavisa Jokanovic last week.

McKinlay resigned from his role as Northern Ireland's assistant manager to concentrate on Watford and has been stunned by recent events.

"I was disappointed,” the former Dundee United and Blackburn midfielder told Sky Sports.

"I was surprised to be appointed in the first place, but for it to only last as short as it did was a surprise to say the least."

When asked whether he would be returning to his role as Michael O'Neill's assistant, McKinlay said: "That is something for another time."
