Harewood tipped to arrive at St James' Park

Newcastle United caretaker boss Chris Hughton is planning to bring in players on loan next week, with Aston Villa striker Marlon Harewood among his targets. Skysports.com revealed on transfer deadline day that Newcastle were fighting it out with Hull City to bring in Harewood on loan. The forward's agent claimed a deal to join Hull had been agreed, only to then collapse, and Harewood could now move to St James' Park. Hughton has confirmed he has shown an interest in the former Nottingham Forest man and aims to improve his squad when the loan window reopens next week.

Big decisions

"Marlon was one of the numerous names we looked at," Hughton told the Evening Chronicle. "We were unable to do business. "We know where we are when it comes to the areas we are short of. "There isn't anybody we can rule in at this stage, but certainly we have some big decisions to make. "In five days' time we hope to bring in loan signings. These will be initial one-month loan deals that could be extended to three months." Hughton has also revealed that the Championship leaders had tried to fix up a deal for Manchester United defender Craig Cathcart before the window closed. He added: "He was a player that was on our minds. "Unfortunately we were unable to do business. And no agreement has been made."
