Henderson sees Hornets home

A double from Darius Henderson earned Watford their first win in five games.

A double from Darius Henderson earned Watford their first win in five games against Ipswich at Vicarage Road.

The hit-man netted a header in either half to see off Joe Royle's outfit who had drawn level after going behind.

The Hornets are already guaranteed a play-off spot, but the win boosts their hopes of securing a place in the top-two play-off positions which would ensure they play the second leg of their semi-final at home.

Adie Boothroyd's men started much the brighter of the two sides and almost edged ahead on six minutes when Clarke Carlisle crashed a header off the bar from Anthony McNamee's right-wing corner - Lewis Price in the Ipswich goal did well to block the defender's follow-up.

The hosts made their dominance count on 33 minutes when McNamee's deep far-post cross found Henderson who did the rest.

Having switched to a 4-4-2 formation in the second period, Ipswich looked a different proposition and, having had a strong penalty appeal turned down, drew level just before the hour mark.

Darren Currie delivered a typically dangerous free kick which was nodded past Ben Foster by Nicky Forster.

Henderson thought he had restored Watford's lead a couple of minutes later but saw his effort chalked off as team-mate Malky Mackay had strayed into an offside position.

However, he did seal the points 13 minutes from time when he got on the end of an Ashley Young cross to power another far-post header home.
