West Brom running the rule over injured centre-half

West Brom are assessing Calum Davenport's medical condition before deciding whether to take him on. The centre-half is currently in the process of recovering from stab wounds to both legs and remains some way off a return to competitive action. However, the Baggies are keen to discover whether they would be wise to bring him on board with the view to getting him involved in their first-team squad once he is fully recovered. There are no plans to offer him a contract at present, with the relationship between the two parties still in its infancy, but both sides are keen to explore their options further. Davenport is without a club, and available as a free agent, having left West Ham by mutual consent last week. It was initially feared that the 27-year-old would never play again after being involved in a much-publicised domestic incident in August 2009. He is, however, confident that he will be able to resume his professional career in the near future. First, though, the former Coventry and Tottenham defender must face trial in relation to the incident in which he sustained his injuries, with court proceedings due to start on 2nd August.
