Hammers target de Jong

West Ham United are being tipped to firm up their interest in Nigel de Jong.

West Ham United are being tipped to firm up their interest in Ajax starlet Nigel de Jong this month.

De Jong seems certain to head out of the Amsterdam ArenA in January, having revealed he does not intend to extend his expiring contract.

Ajax are looking to secure a fee for the midfielder in January rather than lose him for nothing in the summer.

Sevilla and Borussia Dortmund have already held talks with the 21-year-old, while Celtic were rebuffed in their bid as de Jong has set his sights on a switch to England.

Interest from Arsenal and Manchester United has cooled, with The Hammers now reported to be in pole position.

Reports in the Dutch media suggest The Hammers are poised to table a £1 million offer - a figure which could well tempt Ajax into parting with the Dutch international.

Alan Pardew is eager to ensure West Ham consolidate their position in the top flight this term and he has also set his sights on Norwich's Dean Ashton.

The Canaries are eager to keep hold of their key striker, but reports are suggesting Pardew is readying a sizeable offer in a bid to test their resolve.
