Sunderland are rumoured to be waiting in the wings if things do not go to plan, but Bassett is confident of progress.
"We're still waiting for that to be completed," Bassett told skysports.com. "It's close.
"David is just tying up a couple of things at West Ham - and when that is sorted he will sign."
West Ham have already brought in a replacement for the striker - with veteran Teddy Sheringham arriving at Upton Park.
