Latics eye Stoke striker

Oldham Athletic have been in talks with the agent of Gifton Noel-Williams.

Oldham Athletic have been in talks with the agent of Gifton Noel-Williams but face competition from Burnley.

The Stoke striker, who hit 13 goals last season, is wanted by both clubs having indicated that his career at the Britannia Stadium is drawing to a close.

Noel-Williams has been offered a 12-month contract at Stoke but seems certain now to seek pastures new.

Burnley's Championship credentials make them favourites to land the former Watford hit-man's signature but Oldham have intimated they would be willing to offer an attractive package to the right player.

Latics boss Ronnie Moore could step-up his efforts to land Noel-Williams, with a move for Luke Beckett not progressing as the club had hoped.

Meanwhile, Moore has revealed that Rotherham goalkeeper Mike Pollitt remains a target but only if he reduces his personal terms.

Moore worked with Pollitt at Millmoor and is clearly keen to be reunited with his reliable former custodian.

''We certainly need cover for Les Pogliacomi,'' Moore told the club's official website.

''My ideal target would be Michael Pollitt from Rotherham.

''We're just a little short of his financial package, but as time goes on you never know - like a game of poker.

''The longer you leave it the more you can win. We definitely need two keepers pushing for the number one spot.''
