Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has been granted another week to reply to the FA regarding his misconduct charge.

The 78-year-old is the subject of an enquiry following comments made last month in defence of the decision to appoint Malky Mackay as the new Latics manager.

The Wigan Athletic chairman now has until 6pm on Friday 12 December 2014 to respond to the charge.

The Football Association Twitter feed said: "Following a request by Dave Whelan, the FA has granted him an extension to the date by which he had to reply to his misconduct charge for media comments.

"The Wigan Athletic chairman now has until 6pm on Friday 12 December 2014 to respond to the charge."

Whelan made the comments about Jewish and Chinese people in an interview with The Guardian newspaper and despite apologising for any offence caused, was charged by the FA.

Whelan subsequently insisted he would quit as Latics chairman should he be found guilty.
