Latics boss insists point against Toffees was more like it

Roberto Martinez was full of praise for Wigan Athletic's performance in their 1-1 draw with Everton. The Toffees came into the contest of the back of a midweek win over leaders Manchester City and Martinez knew the visitors would have their tails up. Wigan lost 3-1 to Tottenham on Tuesday on the back of defeat to QPR and the Spaniard has admitted their recent displays have not been up to scratch. Martinez was delighted with how his troops contained Everton, although he felt they should have stayed on the front foot after Tim Howard's blunder gifted them an opening goal. The home side failed to hang on for the three points as Victor Anichebe headed home Everton's equaliser in the 83rd minute from Leighton Baines' teasing cross.

Performance

"We are very critical of ourselves in the last two games. We've not put the performances in for the 90 minutes," he told Sky Sports. "We did put in a lot of effort and tried to do the right things. We were a little bit cagey because of the situation and today I couldn't have be prouder. "The performance I really enjoyed our performance. It was difficult conditions. We got on the ball. We showed a real dominance in the game. We kept Everton quiet. "It was unfortunate we couldn't get the three points. But everything in the performance was exactly what we want to achieve. That really pleases me. "It's only a human reaction (to sit back). We're all very responsible on the pitch. You do everything you can to get ahead. Once you get a goal lead you try to get on the ball and do the right things. "Unfortunately today at that moment the ball bounces back to Baines with a great delivery and it's difficult to stop. It is that feeling that you've got something to lose. "At the moment we need to be perfect to get good scorelines. The only way you can get wins is affecting the performance and today we did a good performance and I'm happy with that."
