Mendieta in MLS talks

Gaizka Mendieta is in talks about a possible move to America.

Middlesbrough have confirmed that Gaizka Mendieta is in talks about a possible move to America.

The former Spain international still has 18 months left on his current deal at The Riverside, but boss Gareth Southgate has made it clear he is not part of his long-term plans.

Southgate confirmed Mendieta, who has also been linked with a swith to the Middle East, is considering moving to Major League Soccer.

"There's something happening in the USA that may be a possibility and I don't know whether he will be able to do something during the season," said Southgate.

"Whether he will stay for the remainder of the season remains to be seen. Gaizka is still part of the squad."

Meanwhile, Boro number two Brad Jones has received his first call-up to the full Australia squad.

Jones has been drafted after team-mate Mark Schwarzer pulled out with a bad back.

Jones's inclusion has been backed by another of Boro's Antipodean contingent - Mark Viduka.

"Brad is a very good keeper," said Viduka.

"He has a lot more confidence now and he's done really well in the last two games for us."
