Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany will miss Wednesday's Premier League game against Sunderland with a hamstring injury.

Kompany limped off in the closing stages of Sunday's 3-0 win over Southampton, leaving his side - who had earlier seen Eliaquim Mangala sent off - to play out the contest with nine men.

The Belgium international will have a scan on Tuesday afternoon to determine the extent of the problem.

Kompany's injury, combined with Mangala's suspension, leaves Manuel Pellegrini short of defensive options but, speaking ahead of the trip to Wearside, the manager insisted there was adequate cover in his ranks.

"We'll know this (Tuesday) afternoon exactly what Vincent has. He has an injury to his hamstring; we'll see how long it'll be," Pellegrini told reporters.

"We have Dedryck Boyata working well, we have Martin Demichelis and we have Bacary Sagna. We'll see which two of them will play."

Pellegrini continues to be without left-back Aleksandar Kolarov, playmaker David Silva and striker Edin Dzeko, while Serbian defender Matija Nastasic faces a further week on the sidelines with a thigh muscle problem.
