Pearce holds Distin hope

Stuart Pearce is still hopeful of persuading Sylvain Distin to commit his future to the club.

Stuart Pearce is still hopeful of persuading Sylvain Distin to commit his future to Manchester City.

Middlesbrough are reported to be hot on the trail of the central defender and it was claimed on Tuesday that the Frenchman was set to discuss a deal with the Teessiders.

This report has been rubbished by Pearce who is looking to persuade Distin to etch his name to a new deal at Eastlands.

"He's a Manchester City player and he will be on our tour, so I was quite surprised to turn on the TV and see over my corn flakes Sylvain was supposed to be talking to Middlesbrough," Pearce told Sky Sports News.

Distin is heading into the final year of his contract and Pearce is looking for him to extend his commitment in Manchester.

"We have offered him a fantastic contract and we hope he will sign it," he added.

"One thing that might force his hand is the success of Manchester City over the next season, possibly the likes of Joey Barton and Micah Richards wanting to be part of the club and also the new faces like Didi Hamann and Ousmane Dabo.

"Hopefully we will bring in one or two more allied to those we have already got."
