McManaman to leave City

Steve McManaman will not be handed a new deal with Manchester City.

Steve McManaman has been told that he will not be handed a new deal with Manchester City.

McManaman has never really had the expected impact at City since arriving from Spanish giants Real Madrid.

A long term Achilles problem has blighted his fitness, and new manager Stuart Pearce has told the ex-England international that he is surplus to requirements.

"I had a quick chat with Steve as the season ended and he is basically going away on holiday for a break from football," Pearce told the Manchester Evening News.

"He will decide then where his future lies from there - but it is not here.

"I am not sure where he will go. If he decides to join another club, that is fine.

"But our financial situation meant we couldn't keep him.

"He has had problems with the odd injury and one or two other things. He probably didn't get a real run in the team for whatever reason and he kept being held up with little injuries.

"This season has probably been more frustrating than the season before for him.

"Obviously I haven't used him in my time in charge but credit to him and Paul Bosvelt because they knew their contracts were coming to and end.

"But they conducted themselves fantastically well and they were excellent professionals to have around the place. They added to what we are building around this club."

The 33-year-old may seek a move into media as a pundit if he decides to hang up his boots.
