Distin has been unveiled as City's new skipper in succession to Algerian Ali Benarbia, who left the club earlier this week.
Kevin Keegan was rumoured to be considering handing the armband to new arrival Paul Bosvelt, but Distin is the man he has turned to.
"Paul has proven leadership qualities," said Keegan.
"I believe he will be a big influence on and off the pitch."
"But he will not be captain. That honour goes to Sylvain Distin who takes over from Ali Benarbia."
"The arrival of Paul Bosvelt now means that I have decision makers in key areas on the pitch."
