Alan Pardew admits he was disappointed Newcastle did not claim three points on Saturday after they were held to a 3-3 draw by Crystal Palace at St James' Park.
Winger Wilfried Zaha upstaged fellow substitute Rolando Aarons to earn Neil Warnock a point in his first match back as Crystal Palace manager.
Teenager Aarons looked to have inspired Newcastle to a first win of the season after coming off the bench to score one and create another until Zaha pounced five minutes into added time to make an immediate impact following his return to Palace on loan from Manchester United.
It was a result which Pardew was left to lament, with the Magpies manager believing his side deserved the victory.
"I'm disappointed for the club because we should have won really," he told Sky Sports.
"Obviously we've had to come from a goal down after 30 seconds, a goal two minutes after half-time where we certainly should have done better in those periods.
Both goals were preventable from our point of view, we've been really good defensively this week and maybe we just took our eye off what we've been really good at.
"We've dominated possession and tried to force the issue and in the end it's taken a young player to come off the bench and open it up, which he's got the ability to do.
"We got ourselves the lead and we should have seen it out."
Palace made a flying start and were in front inside the opening minute when Dwight Gayle reacted the quickest to turn home the loose ball after Marouane Chamakh’s shot had been pushed onto the post by Tim Krul.
Darryl Janmaat brought Newcastle level before half-time but Palace again flew out of the blocks in the second half as Jason Puncheon’s volley beat Krul.
"Both goals were preventable from our point of view, we've been really good defensively this week and maybe we just took our eye off what we've been really good at," he added.
"We weren't as tight as we have been in the other two games but we'll get back to that, we've got a lot of new players and we're trying to get the blend right."
Although disappointed by the result, Pardew was quick to heap the praise on Aarons following his impressive contribution from the bench.
"He's got a good all-round ability and he's been a real bonus for us, he's forced his way into my thinking and took his opportunity well today," he added.
With the summer transfer window set to close on Monday, Pardew refused to offer any insight into the club's activity.
"I don't know, I'll see the chief executive tonight and see what plans he has," he said.
