Latest Twitter outburst suggests midfielder could run down deal

Joey Barton has threatened to rebel against Newcastle's determination to cut ties with the midfielder by running down his contract. The former England international has been using Twitter to inform football fans of developments since the Magpies placed him on the transfer list on Monday. Barton has taunted the club's hierarchy on the social network website, which contributed to his transfer listing, and has now suggested he may run down the final year of his contract. He wrote: "Just because ur [sic] told to jump, it does not necessarily mean u have to. I may choose to stand perfectly still. It's my right...just a thought." Barton, who was forced to train alone on Tuesday, has one year remaining on his current deal, but Newcastle are willing to let the 28-year-old leave for nothing, such is the soured relationship. The former Manchester City midfielder, who Newcastle fans voted their player of the season last year, has no shortage of interest with Arsenal, Celtic and Tottenham reported to be amongst the frontrunners for his signature.
