Midfielder hands Kinnear boost

Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt has signed a new one-year deal at the club. Butt's existing deal was due to expire in the summer, but the club have tied him down for a further 12 months. The former Manchester United star has established himself as a key member of the Newcastle side in recent seasons after a slow start to his career on Tyneside. Butt joins Steve Harper and Shola Ameobi in signing new contracts at St James' Park. The news is a boost for Magpies boss Joe Kinnear as he looks to steer the side clear of trouble at the wrong end of the table. Butt was delighted to finally resolve his future at St James' Park. "I'm happy to get it sorted - now know I'll be staying at Newcastle United next season," said Butt. "We hope we can get things moving forward again, start climbing the table and finish this season as strong as we possibly can."
