Keeper may pen new deal after revealing future plans

Newcastle United goalkeeper Steve Harper has hinted that he will look to commit his long-term future to the club. Harper's current contract is due to expire at the end of next season, and reports have linked him with a move away from St James' Park. However, the 33-year-old is looking to the future under manager Kevin Keegan, intimating that he is keen to assist the club's progression. "Realistically we are looking at the top eight but hopefully it can be the top six," Harper told the Evening Chronicle. "We finished 12th last year. And we've got to get back into the top half of the table. "It won't happen overnight. We have to first look to get back in the top six at some stage and then build year on year." Harper joined Newcastle in 1993 and enjoyed his most productive campaign last term, making 19 Premier League starts.
