Martins dedicated to Magpies

Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins has pledged his future to the club.

Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins has pledged his future to the club.

Martins insists he will give his all to the side after he went AWOL in the Magpies' final match of the season at Watford.

"I signed a contract with Newcastle and I am happy at the club and the way the fans supported me even when I wasn't scoring great," Martins told The Chronicle.

"If I am fully fit there is no way I will back out from playing any game for Newcastle.

"But it wouldn't be right for me to wear the shirt and play when I know that I will not be giving my best.

"That will be like cheating the fans.

"Every time I play I want to give my best and it upsets me when people suggest that I tried to dodge a game by faking injury. I have never done that and I will never do that."

The 22-year-old frontman escaped without injury on Monday night when a car carrying the player and several other people was riddled with bullets in the Nigerian city of Lagos.

The incident happened just 48 hours after Martins helped Nigeria qualify for January's African Cup of Nations finals as he featured in the 3-1 win over Niger in Niamey.
