Emre: I want to stay

Turkish star Emre insists he will not quit Newcastle despite a turbulent season.

Turkish star Emre insists he will not quit Newcastle despite a rocky season which eventually led to an FA disciplinary charge.

The 26-year-old, who was accused of taunting Everton players with racist remarks, had been linked with a move to Galatasaray or Bayern Munich in the summer but insists he is going nowhere.

Emre told the Daily Mirror: "I still have three years of my contract left and I want to stay here.

"I don't think the fans have seen the best of me," he added.

"There have been times when I have played well, but there have also been times when it wasn't so good. But now I am happy and I don't want to look at the past."

Toon boss Glen Roeder has backed Emre to prove himself at St James' Park and admits the interest from other clubs has further added to his admiration for the player.

"I have been very pleased, but that does not surprise me," said Roeder. "He is a terrific little pro.

"He lives right, plays right and wants to play all the time."

Emre was cleared of all accusations relating to a racism charge in December in which he was accused of an angry exchange with Everton's Tim Howard, Joleon Lescott and Joseph Yobo.

But Roeder says all that is behind him, adding: "He has got on with his life. He is an excellent footballer."
